For the spring issue of The Bourbon Review, I talked with Buffalo Trace master distiller Harlen Wheatley about his distillery’s expansive experimental program – the largest such program in the world. At any given time, roughly 1,000 barrels at Buffalo Trace are devoted to experiments. The goal? Discovering the perfect bourbon, which Wheatley refers to as The Holy Grail.
