UPDATE: The Speakeasies won the third annual Bourbon Chase, and they made it look easy, indeed, covering the 200-mile course in 19 hours and 35 minutes. That’s a pace of 5:52 per mile! Next year’s race is Sept. 28-29.
Right about now, there’s a big run on the Heaven Hill Distillery just outside Bardstown, Ky. No, they’re not having a sale on Elijah Craig. Heaven Hill is one of the six Kentucky distilleries along the course of The Bourbon Chase, an annual 200-mile relay race that began at 8 this morning at the Jim Beam Outpost in Clermont and will end sometime tomorrow in downtown Lexington.
The race is broken into 36 legs, with each member of the 12-person teams running three. Capped at 250 teams, the Bourbon Chase sold out again this year. Last year’s winning team finished in just under 21 hours; the final team crossed the finish line in 34:39:35. I’d say they all earned their celebratory bourbon samples.
A warm Kentucky welcome to all of this year’s competitors. I’ll be raising a glass while I track your progress on Twitter (follow @willrun4bourbon or search #bourbonchase).
