Jim Beam Distiller’s Masterpiece
100 proof; “extra-aged” (no exact age statement given); $199.99/750ml
This limited-edition, extra-aged Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey was barrel-finished in Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry casks and released around Kentucky Derby time. Like Wild Turkey Tradition, it comes in an elaborate wooden package. The catch: It’s available only at the Jim Beam American Stillhouse in Clermont, Ky.
Aroma: Distinct alcohol vapor; lots of wood and smoke woven through by a bracing ribbon of citrus.
Taste: The citrus (sweet orange) continues on the front, followed by notes of vanilla, nutmeg and baking spices. Despite the woody aroma, there is no wood bitterness on the palate; the sweetness of the sherry casks smooths it all the way down. Warm, dry finish.
Verdict: If you’re a collector, this will make a handsome addition, and the juice is quite good. Jim Beam provided me with a small sample of Distiller’s Masterpiece for this review, and while it’s a fine bourbon, I don’t think I’ll be driving to the Stillhouse to purchase a full bottle. There are many other super-premium bourbons to be had for a less super-premium price.
