Italy: Our reputation precedes us

image

This summer I took my first trip to Italy. I expected the amazing architecture, the lush landscapes and the epic sweep of history that permeates every city and town. What I didn’t expect was the reaction from Italians when they asked where I was from and I said Kentucky. To a person, they all responded: “Whiskey!”

Not “Kentucky Fried Chicken,” not “Kentucky Derby.” “Whiskey.” It was the response of the gondolier in Venice, above, and of the waiter in Rome, below, who then broke into his own version of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines”: “Whiskey… you know you want it….”

Pretty great, huh? And then, at our cute hotel in Montecatini Terme…

… look what we found!

We didn’t indulge, however. Our gracious host instead offered us Il Santo, a wine customarily served as a welcoming drink to guests in Tuscany. The golden wine was very sweet, with notes of apricot and almond and a rich, raisiny finish. Salute!
