One of the last places in the world you would expect to find a Spanish mission–style building is just off the Bluegrass Parkway near Lawrenceburg, Ky. But the distillery’s original owner hired a California architect and gave him a lot of leeway. The bright-yellow structures make a striking impression, but it’s the smooth-tasting bourbon crafted here that you’ll remember long after you leave. A recently expanded visitor center includes a collection of vintage advertising, antique bottles, and a premium tasting bar.
You might expect that the warehouses across the road from the Four Roses Distillery are filled with barrels of Four Roses bourbon, but they aren’t — they are owned by Wild Turkey, another Lawrenceburg distillery. To see where Four Roses is aged and bottled, you’ll need to travel to its facility in Cox’s Creek.
